The embassy handling fee for a long-stay (type D) visa is 250 euro from 1 July 2026. In addition, most students must pay an administrative fee to the Belgian Immigration Office by bank transfer before applying (the amount depends on the institution type; scholarship holders are often exempt). Expect extra costs for the medical certificate, document legalization and the visa centre service charge.
Get admission from a recognized Belgian institution, arrange proof of funds and pay the Immigration Office administrative fee. Documents attested in Pakistan and legalized by the Belgian Embassy. Submit the complete file through the Gerry's International visa drop box, where fingerprints are also taken. The embassy then reviews the file and may cal the student for an interview.
Yes, it is possible. After submit a complete file, the embassy may contact you for an interview, so wait for their call and be ready to explain your course choice and funding.
Not on the student visa itself. Family members must apply separately for family reunification, which needs much higher proof of means and can take many months (some embassies mention up to 9 months).
Yes. The Embassy of Belgium is in Islamabad. Visa applications are submitted through Gerry's International visa drop box.
Yes. You can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year, and more than 20 hours during official holidays, as long as work does not clash with classes. You cannot work during the summer before your first academic year starts.
Not directly. As a student you do not qualify for EU long-term resident status. After graduating you can request up to 12 months (search year) to find a job or start a business, then switch to a work or self-employment permit.
EU long-term residence is possible on that other status after 5 years of uninterrupted legal stay, plus stable means and health insurance.
Typically about 3,000-8,000 euro per year for non-EU students, depending on the institution and region.
Some specialized or private institutions charge much more (one Brussels institution lists about 17,500 for a full-time year).
Typically from a few thousand euro up to about 9,000 euro per year in Flanders and Brussels, and around 5,000 in many programs.
Plan for about 2-4 months once your file is complete, because document legalization, the possible interview and the Immigration Office review all take time.
Belgian universities advise applying for a type D visa 4-5 months before your intended stay, and processing can be slower in summer.
Educational diplomas and transcripts must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
(MOFA) in Pakistan and then legalized by the Belgian Embassy in Islamabad through
Gerry's.
Pakistani documents not in English need translation into French (diplomas fully in English do not).
The police certificate must also be legalized, and the medical certificate must come from an embassy-approved doctor.
