For a Residence Permit–Student application submitted from 1 January 2026, the application fee is €218. Other visa,
service or document-verification costs may apply. Fees in Pakistan are paid in PKR at the Embassy's current exchange
rate.
For a stay over six months, a Pakistani student normally needs a Residence Permit–Student. The first application is
submitted personally to the Austrian Embassy/competent authority abroad before travel. After approval, a Visa D is
normally used for entry and collection of the residence permit. The Islamabad Embassy uses direct email appointment
requests for Residence Permit–Student applications.
There is no universal separate interview for every student. Residence-permit applications are personal and the
authorities can ask questions or request more evidence. Be ready to explain the programme, finances, accommodation
and study plan.
A student residence permit does not automatically give family members residence. Austria has separate
family-reunification residence routes with their own relationship, accommodation and financial requirements.
Yes. The Austrian Embassy in Islamabad is the competent mission for Pakistan. Schengen visa applications are
outsourced to VFS centres in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Residence Permit–Student appointment requests are
sent directly to the Embassy/Consulate by email
Yes, with the required employment permit. A third-country student with a Residence Permit–Student can generally
obtain a work permit for up to 20 hours per week without a labour-market test; the employer applies to AMS.
Student status itself is not PR. After successfully completing an Austrian degree, a graduate can generally renew the
student residence permit once for 12 months to look for employment or start a business. A qualifying job can lead to a
Red-White-Red Card route. Permanent settlement has additional legal requirements.
At Austrian public universities, third-country students generally pay €751.92 per semester under the current 2026 Study
in Austria information, plus the compulsory ÖH/student accident insurance contribution of €25.20 per semester.
Universities of applied sciences and private universities may charge different amounts.
The same general public-university third-country tuition rule applies: €751.92 per semester plus €25.20 per semester
ÖH/student accident insurance under the current 2026 Study in Austria page. UAS/private institutions can set different
fees.
The Embassy says Residence Permit–Student appointments may have longer waiting times because of high demand
and recommends applying early. Plan several months rather than assuming a short Schengen-style processing period.
Common requirements include application form, passport, photo, admission letter, accommodation, sufficient funds,
health insurance and legalized/authenticated public documents as required. For 2026, OeAD lists minimum funds of
€722.58/month for students under 24 and €1,308.39/month from age 24; these are generally demonstrated for 12
months in advance, with additional funds if accommodation exceeds the stated threshold.
